Antique Defense in Tatev

In 1950 "Antique Defense" Committee began its mission in Tatev. It had 4 employees and was  centered in the monastery. A museum was organized there, the branch of Erebuny museum in Yerevan. Nikolay Gevorgyan was the museum director, and Lusik Babayan was the guide. At the time about 100 visits were registered in the monastery.


Since 1970 renewing of the monastery complex had been done. They renewed St. Virgin church,stables, cleaned all the churches and other buildings. The holy-chipped stones were taken out and piled up out of the rampart. At the time "Antique Defense" committee began diggings in the monastery. Rebuilding and renewing untill 1992. The hard situation of the country caused it to stop. Then Syunik holy leader made an effort of doing some important work. It has been several years since the "Antique Defense" committee has had power over Tatev monastery. According to the state order it is given to St. Ejmiatzin and it belongs to Syunik holy center.


With efforts of the patriarch and Syunik holy leader some investigations have been done for a few months, a financial budget has been fixed to renew the monastery thoroughly and perhaps the building will start in coming spring, in 2005 Artush Hovhannisyan, as being in office of candle, sales in the monastery, he manages all the economical affairs of the monastery himself, and he created a small museum by his private initiation and now he owns it and tries to enrich. As he is the only employee in the monastery, he also is the guide for those tourists who want him to explain the history of the complex.


Tatev monastery and the other architectural columns surrounding it are not only under attention of studious architects, artists, and paleontologists, but also it became an active tourism center. Some work has been done for developing the tourism in Tatev as well as in Armenia. The visits have been increasing in last five years and at the period they registered exactly the quantity of visits and it is almost 15000 visits yearly.
