Tatev University

Grigor Tatevatsy

In the XIV-XV centuries Armenia was pron to invasion of conquerors and many wars, caused a difficult life style. The possession of backward tribes, willful and rough taxes, the legality of violence and robbery caused the fall and retrogression of the culture and economy.
Only a small part of Armenia, the historical Syunik, comparatively stayed in a good condition, but just not the whole period. Owing to the propitious condition of politic and economy, Armenians succeed in preventing the fall of ancient culture temporarily in this part of the country, also to develop and raise some of its branches in a new degree. The standard bearer of this patriotism became Gladzor University acting in Vayots Dzor, which during the 1330s had degradation. But it didn't upset the duration of schooling: a new university, Tatev University, was created and bloomed in Syunik following the Glazdor's traditions. The founder of the famous hearth of Armenian schooling and culture was Gladzor's previous student, talented science Ohvan Vorotnetsy (1315-1386).
Early in 1340s after the degradation of Gladzor University, O. Vorotnetsi went to Tzghuk, Vorotn, and initiated in the creation of a new Educational Hearth. With the help of Orbelyans in the middles of 1340s he moved into Tatev and education was grounded on stronger foundation. After short period Vorotnetsy's institution became a full-bodied university, where many were educated not only from Syunik, and whole Armenia, but from Kilikia and the countries where Armenians lived.
Tatev University educated teachers for the schools of Syunik and the other places, for there were new school establishments, under Tatev control. Using the experience of Gladzor University Vorotnetsy improved the educational plans, regulated the admission of new students and the educational gradualness of scientists. Grigor Tatevatsy, the most talented student of Vorotnetsy, the continuer of his work, raised the inner organization of Tatev University on a new level. The years he conducted were the most fruitful and blossom forth period.
Not many contemporaries of Vorotnetsy and Tatevatsy recognized so clearly the protection and the development of national culture in a such a historical condition, was probably the only way for war torn Armenia to resist strong but ignoramus and rough conquerors. Owing to the diligences of these talented men and their students and descent men who left unique scientific legacy developed polygonal. Tatev University became the biggest Scientific-cultural center of the time where meaningful scientific achievements were put down over the world. They were more impressive on the political background, when the university had to wander time by time caused the persecution of foreign despots.
Having a national-social huge weight, collaboration with Armenian traditional clergy, Tatev University conducted and enlarged an important activity having an international meaning as a struggle against Unitarian movement. University staff and students had their biggest initiation in the act of transformation of Patriarchal from Sis to Edmiatzin, which was the greatest event of the period in Armenian history. After death of Grigor Tatevatzy the university began to depredate. No matter how the new staff, Matevos Jughayetsy, Mkhitar Tatevatsy and the others tried, in case of future difficulties of political-economical insecure condition Tatev began to decline, and in the middles of 20s in the XV century finally stopped its existence as an university. Tatev university and its conducted schools kept past cultural traditions alive for about eight dozen and enriched medieval Armenian culture.
