Visit Tatev Village
|
Located in the heart of Zangezur, the southern region of Armenia, Tatev's cultural and historical significance is equaled only by the beauty of its surroundings. Reached by a scenic route that meanders up from the Vorotan canyon through orchards and fields, the village is situated at an altitude of 1600 meters, making it a pleasant getaway in the summer. One of the oldest continuously inhabited villages in Armenia, its origins are traced back to the 5th century while its name is derived from the fortified monastic complex, built at the edge of the village. |

Tatev offers a unique example of well preserved rural charm and character. The clusters of houses nestled in the gentle hills display the typical rural architecture of the southern Caucasus. Hundreds of panes from the glass enclosed balconies sparkle in the setting sun, as shepherds bring their flock from the pastures, creating a magical mosaic. Traditional Armenian hospitality is a trademark of Tatev where villagers will welcome you into their homes and feast visitors with open arms. In the village an array of other traditional activities such as combing and threading wool with centuries old spindles, baking lavash in old fashioned "tonirs", or the distilling of spirits can still be witnessed in many family homes. Visitors will enjoy the pure air, the bounties of the land and the good cuisine of Tatev made solely from organically grown and additive free ingredients. |
